Project Overview
What is the purpose of this project?
The Egan Drive and Vanderbilt Hill Road Intersection Improvement project aims to transform one of Juneau’s intersections into a safer, more efficient corridor. The project will implement a "Continuous Green T" design, which allows southbound traffic on Egan Drive to flow through the intersection without stopping for a red light. Drivers turning left from Vanderbilt Hill Road onto southbound Egan will be given their own protected lane to safely merge into traffic. By allowing one direction of the highway to move freely, the updated traffic signals can provide more green-light time for other turns, reducing delays for everyone.
What construction activities will take place?
Construction activities will include:
- Installation and removal of construction signage
- Reconstruction of medians
- New signage, traffic pattern, and striping
- Grading and paving
How will construction affect me?
Traffic control will include permanent construction signage, lane closures, reduced speed zones, and route detours.
Continuous Green T Intersection
The Egan Drive and Vanderbilt Hill Road intersection is entering its final stretch of construction!
It has been reconstructed as a Continuous Green T intersection, a design used across the country where a side road meets a highway. This video walks through the changes for each direction of travel.
Construction Update
Planned Construction Activities and Major Impacts
Construction began May 27, 2026, and is now complete. Work was completed in phases:
- Phase 1 includes mobilization, the Vanderbilt Hill Road closure and detour, and new median work on Vanderbilt Hill Road and Egan Drive.
- Phase 2 includes the new acceleration lane and widened left-turn lane on Egan Drive, paving, new signal timing, and intersection reopening before final project completion.
Traffic Control Plan and Impacts to Residents and Businesses
- Motorists traveling to or from the Lemon Creek area will need to detour via Glacier Highway, using the following routes:
- Southbound from the Valley: Use the detour exit at the Sunny Point Intersection
- Northbound from Downtown: Use the detour exit at the Hospital Intersection
- Expect a 45 MPH speed limit on Egan Drive for approximately one-quarter mile approaching the Vanderbilt intersection from both the north and south.
- Fines are doubled in work zones. Please slow down, stay alert, and watch for crews in this area.
Current Construction Activities
Construction is complete and the intersection is open for public use.
Project hotline and email will be monitored through September 30, 2026.
As described in the video above, the biggest changes are:
- Southbound Egan no longer stops at Vanderbilt.
- Westbound Vanderbilt has one left turn lane protected by the traffic signal and one right turn lane with the same acceleration and merge lane as before.
All other movements at the intersection operate as they did before construction.
